If you thought that crop cultivation in SIngapore was restricted to hydrophonic farms, think again. This thriving community garden at Bedok North Avenue 3 boasts an assortment of plants including spinach, peanuts, kang kong, chye sim, long beans and herbs. This verdant patch, which was allocated by the Kampong Chai Chee Rainbow Ville Residents' Committee (RC), has been lovingly tended to bt green-fingered residents for the better part of a decade.

Garderns such as this are part of the NParks 'Community in Bloom' (CIB) programme, which aims to develop a gardening culture among Singaporeans. Today, there are about 300 gardening groups which not only seek to introduce urban farming to their neighbourhoods, but also foster community spirit.

East Coast Town Council will be upgrading the children playground and the fitness corner at Blk 409 and Blk 410 Bedok North Ave 2 respectively.

Town Council is in the process of calling for tender, the expected commencement date for the upgrading work will be in 3rd quarter of 2011.

The upgrading of these 2 facilities will definitely enhance the lifestyle of our residents.

New Drop Off Shelter at Blk 405 Bedok North Ave 3

East Coast Town Council will be constructing a new drop-off shelter in front of Blk 405 Bedok North Ave 3.

As the tender of this project has just been awarded, the expected commencement date for the construction work will be in the 3rd quarter of 2011.

With the construction of this new shelter, it will be convenient for residents staying at the surrounding blocks to drop off from their vehicles without getting wet during raining days.

Rainbow Ville basketball court gets a new coat of paint!

ECTC hits the court at Rainbow Ville last week, but instead of basketball they wielded paint brushes.
The court is heavily used by residents throughout the year and really need to be done over. Thank you Town Council for the great work!

Lunar New Year Dinner Celebration 2011

Rainbow Ville residents celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year dinner at Block 406 Bedok North Ave 3 basketball court on Friday, 11th February 2011 (正月初九).

Over 500 residents of all races together with Grassroots leaders attended the dinner. Our Adviser, Mr Lee Yi Shyan (MP for East Coast GRC), was the Guest of Honor.

The event was inaugurated with a lively Lion Dance performance that set in the festive mood. Residents were treated to a sumptuous 9 course dinner, live band and songs performances by professional entertainers. Together with our GOH, all the residents participated in a mass "lou hei" to usher in luck & prosperity for the Rabbit year! Every diners shouted 恭喜发财，步步高升，兔飞猛进，财源滚滚.....during the tossing of Yu Sheng.

Mr Lee and Grassroots leaders also visited each table for a "Yum Sheng" session.

Mid Autumn Festival cum Mass Birthday Celebration - 18 September 2010

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a popular East Asian celebration of abundance and togetherness that is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar (usually around mid- or late-September in the Gregorian calendar). To celebrate this day, Rainbow Ville Senior Citizens' Sub-Commitee and residents gathered together on 18th September 2010 to light up lanterns and admire the full moon while eating moon cakes, sumptuous buffet dinner, karaoke session, etc.

Our Adviser, Mr Lee Yi Shyan (MP of East Coast GRC) took time to celebrate with our residents.

Youth Olympic Flame Passed Through Kg Chai Chee on 08.08.2010

Journey Of The Youth Olympic Flame Celebrates Sports In Singapore On The Second Day Of The Torch Relay.

Mr Alfred Lee & Mr Calvin Lim from Kg Chai Chee YEC were among the 400 torchbearers today, carried the Youth Olympic Flame through our neighbourhood.

The torch relay winds through all five community districts in Singapore from 7—13 August (with a break on 9 August), passing through Singapore's bustling financial district, cultural centre and the new downtown before reaching the waters of the beautiful Marina Reservoir and the Float@Marina Bay - the venue for the Singapore 2010 Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

The Flame's journey will culminate in the torch being brought to the Float @Marina Bay in Singapore, the world's largest floating stage, on 14 August 2010. It will ignite the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games cauldron as part of the Opening Ceremony, signifying the start of the Games. Once lit, the Flame will continue to burn brightly throughout the 12 days of the Games until the Closing Ceremony on 26 August 2010.

Resident's Car damaged by fallen tree branch

The tree branch broke off, then fell and damaged the rear windscreen of our resident's car during morning heavy rain on Sunday 1st August 2010.

The car was parked under the tree. No one was injured.

ECTC was notified at 8:30am. Police and horticulture contractors reached the scene at about 9.00am and cleared the branch by 10.00am.

The One Community Walk is an unprecedented nation-wide mass walking event engaging more than 80,000 residents from all the constituencies in Singapore. This event is the largest synchronized mass walking event in Singapore to date and one of the biggest displays by the community in support of the inaugural Singapore Youth Olympic Games.

Racial Harmony Day will be held in conjunction with One Community Walk. We hope to bring our residents together through a series of multi-cultural/racial performances. Highlights include song/dance performances from different ethnic groups, tea art demonstration, etc.

Singapore's National Day, August 9th, is coming around again. Singaporeans are strongly encouraged to display the national flag outside their homes ahead of National Day celebrations.

Like every year, Rainbow Ville Resident's Committee has reserved a few weekends to put up the flags in our precinct to display our love and patriotism for Singapore.

If you have not displayed your National flag yet, please get into the act now to show your love for our country by flying the flag.

Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP) Polling Results for Blk 401 to 404 Bedok North Ave 3

With changing lifestyles and aging population, direct lift access has become a priority. Our precinct has been selected for the Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP). Polling was conducted for eligible voters from 25 Jun 2010 (Friday) to 28 Jun 2010 (Monday).

We are pleased to announce that we have achieved an average of 95% votes in favour of the LUP. Residents can look forward to greater convenience with lifts that give them direct access to their homes.

The three sites at Bedok, Yishun and Jurong West are from the confirmed list under the government land sales (GLS) programme in the second half of the year. The Housing & Development Board (HDB) is handling the tenders.

Of these sites, the 99-year-lease one at New Upper Changi Road/Bedok North Drive attracted the most attention because it can house a commercial-residential development which will be integrated with a bus interchange.

The 2.49 hectare site is at Bedok Town Centre, next to Bedok MRT Station, and is surrounded by amenities such as supermarkets and a library. It has a maximum permissible gross floor area (GFA) of 938,157 square feet and can yield an estimated 475 dwelling units.

DTZ South-east Asia research head Chua Chor Hoon believes this plot is the most attractive of the three because it is centrally located in a well populated town. Also, 'there are only a few mixed sites available at the heart of HDB estates in the GLS programme', she said.

Dumpling Festival cum Mass Birthday Celebration - June 2010

This month Mass Birthday coincide with the Dumpling Festival (端午节) to be officially celebrated on June16 (五月初五). However, Rainbow Ville RC Senior Citizens Club celebrated early on June 12.

This month event was attended by more than 60 participants. They were treated to dumplings prepared by the committee.

In November 2006, FCL acquired two adjacent properties, namely the Bedok Theatre and Changi Theatre, located in Bedok Town Centre. FC Commercial has redeveloped the Bedok sites and adjoining state lands into a suburban lifestyle retail mall with net lettable area of approximately 80,000 sq ft. This mall is expected to be injected into FCT upon completion in 2010.

正月是农历的元月，古人称夜为“宵”，所以称正月十五为元宵节。正月十五日是一年中第一个月圆之夜，也是一元复始，大地回春的夜晚，人们对此加以庆祝，也是庆贺新春的延续。元宵节又称为“上元节”。

为了庆元宵，传承及推广华人传统文化，彩虹山庄乐龄居委会在正月十四(2010年2月27日)也举办了一年一度的节庆与庆生活动。人力部兼贸工部政务部长李奕贤是当晚的晚宴嘉宾。

当晚李奕贤部长除了与二月份生日的乐龄人士一起庆祝生日，也和全体彩虹山庄的居民一同捞起，希望来年风生水起，大家身体健康，国泰民安！

Lunar New Year Cum Senior Citizens' 10th Anniversary Dinner Celebration 2010

Rainbow Ville residents celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year cum Senior Citizens' 10th Anniversary with a dinner at the Open Plaza between Block 403 & 404 Bedok North Ave 3 on Friday, 19th February 2010 (正月初六). This event was organised by Rainbow Ville Residents' Committee and supported by IRCC.

More than 550 over residents together with Grassroots leaders attended the dinner. Our Adviser, Mr Lee Yi Shyan (MP for East Coast GRC), was the GOH.

Those present were treated to a sumptuous 9 course dinner, live band and songs performances by professional entertainers. A lively Lion Dance performance accompanied by the thunderous beating of drums and cymbals injected our Chinese New Year celebrations with great cheer and spirit. Together with our GOH, all the residents participated in a mass "lou hei" to usher in luck & prosperity for the Tiger year! Common phrases like 恭喜发财，步步高升，财源滚滚，中4D，中TOTO，发呀 were shouted during the tossing of Yu Sheng.

Mr Lee and Grassroots leaders also visited each table for a "Yum Sheng" session. Our GOH also took time to present appointment certificate to our Senior Citizens' Club Committee.

Makan Time!

Thank you Mr & Mrs Kader for introducing two new dishes to our non-muslim residents. It was especially hand-made by Mrs Kader for the birthday party. The photo on the left is Roti Jala - means "net bread" literally. These lacy and net like pancakes/crepes are very popular during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and its best eaten with chicken curry. The photo on the right is Epok Epok, a Malay version of samosas.The pastry is consistently thin and crispy and not overly stuffed. The taste is so delighfully delicious!

Mr & Mrs Kader have also prepared a basket of nicely ribbon wrapped mini-towel souvenir for the residents! A BIG Thank You from All of us!

Bedok site now open for application

A 99-year leasehold site next to Bedok MRT Station is now open for application by developers through the reserve list of the government. The site is considered by some property consultants to be worth over $500 million.

The 2.49-hectare plot is intended for residential and commercial use. According to analysts, it can be built into a suburban mall with a 500-unit condo and a net lettable area of around 220,000 square feet.

The proposed development will include a new bus interchange to replace the existing interchange within the site.

The plot is stipulated to have a maximum gross floor area (GFA) of 938,157 sq ft. Of this GFA, 338,665 sq ft can be apportioned for the retail component, which translates to a net lettable area (NLA) of around 220,000 sq ft.

The residential GFA of the project could be around 562,900 sq ft. “Based on the simulation for the bus interchange done by Land Transport Authority, the estimated GFA for the bus interchange concourse is 3,400 sq m (about 36,600 sq ft),” said a spokesperson for HDB, who is also the sales agent for the parcel of land.

Li Hiaw Ho, executive director of CB Richard Ellis, points out that it is likely that Bedok MRT Station will be the future Eastern Region Line’s interchange station. “So this is going to be a very busy location. It's ideally suited for another regional shopping centre with a residential component,” he added.

The government earlier said that the development and sale of the site will form part of the renovation plans for Bedok Town Centre.

“Bedok is a good location compared to many suburban areas because it's not that far out. It's a pretty mature town, currently served by older HDB shophouses. However, they are not very well connected and organized; a new mall will draw a lot of retailers as it's going to be connected to the MRT station and integrated with the new bus interchange,” said Danny Yeo, managing director of Knight Frank.

According to the HDB, the plot is situated in the heart of Bedok New Town.

Mr. Yeo argues that the proposed mall is not limited for HDB flat dwellers, but it will also cater to those residing in condominiums and landed homes in the fringe of Bedok. “It will pose quite a bit of a challenge to malls in places like Tampines and Simei,” he added.

He projects the land value for the retail component of the project at around $800-900 psf of possible GFA while Mr .Li of CBRE put the figure at $850 to $900 psf ppr. Either way, the breakeven cost works out to retail NLA of about $2,000 psf. Mr. Li projects about $400 psf ppr of land value for the residential component, which reflects a breakeven cost of about $800 psf.

“They can sell the apartments to recoup part of the investment in the project. This will allow developers more leeway to bid more aggressively for the site,” suggests Mr. Yeo.

Mr. Li has high hopes that the site will be released in spite of the fact that the government is scheduled to launch eight residential sites on the confirmed list in the first half of 2010.

Senior Citizens' Club celebrated Christmas 2009 & Mass Birthday Celebration on 19 December 2009. More than 100 residents, children and adults, gathered at the Senior Citizens' Corner for the Christmas Party. As usual, particpants bring down their home-cooked food while the organiser contributes the Birthday Cake, drinks, finger food & dessert.

Santa Claus also made a special appearance at our party with two big bags of goodies for the children. He has definitely brought joys and laughters to the children as well as the adults. We have also invited members from BBTC - Bethesda (Bedok-Tampines) Church to sing Christmas carols at our party.

At the end of the event, everyone went back in high spirits, looking forward to next year Christmas Party as well as our other upcoming RC activities.

Rainbow Ville Precint Unveils Shiny New Playground

A new colourful playground for children at the Open Plaza between Blk 403 & Blk 404 was unveiled last Friday (4-Dec-09).

The multi-colored playground which took 4 months to build, under ECTC Improvement Works, comes equipped with three slides, interactive stations, disc climbers, disc traverse, clift climbers and bouncer.

The children were having fun when I was there last evening.

Joe, 7, wants to play on the equipment everyday.

"I like climbing the wall," he said. "The slide is really fun to slide down".

Shan Shan, 6, said the old playground was "boring and didn't have all this cool stuff."

The new playground was unveiled at the right time during this school holiday. It was like an early X'mas present for them. It's rewarding to see them having fun! Ho Ho Ho Ho Ho.........

The new playground was also fitted with 3 fitness equipments for the adult/elderly.

The Singapore Journey - 28 & 29th November 2009

Another National Education Programme by NACLI, allowing participants to fully appreciate the importance of their role in building a thriving and successful Singapore. This is a two-day programme with study visits to Labrador Park, Fort Canning Hill, War Memorial Park, 'Reflections at Bukit Chandu' and Grassroots Heritage Centre.

As usual, let me share with you some photos that I have taken during the field trip. Let's begin the Singapore Journey from here....................................

Day 1 - The Lion City History Trail

We started our Singapore Journey learning from two videos screening on Singapore history - Title "Days of Fire" when Singapore was under British colonial rule and "Day of Darkness" when Singapore was conquered and occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1942 to 1945.

After the 2hr video screening, we had our lunch before our field trip.

They are my fellow course mates - grassroots leaders from various constituency.

The journey that everyone was looking forward to.....say cheese..........The man on the left is our course leader Mr Tay Nguan Tong, Principal Trainer (Community Development Programme).

1st Stop : Labrador Park

Labrador Battery is one of the surviving gun emplacements in Singapore today. The battery boosted two 6-inch guns facing south, weighing 16 tons each. They had a range of over 10 miles and could fire a 102-pound shell with a 31-pound cartridge.

Labrador Park was one of the prepared defensive positions. In the Battle for Pasir Panjang, these guns aided the Malay Regiment by firing high explosive shells at advancing Japanese troops along the coastal road. Tunnels and bunkers beneath the Battery was used to supply ammunition and included living quarters for troops.

2nd Stop : Fort Canning Hill

Fort Canning Park is the most historic part of Singapore. It underwent serveral name changes from Bukit Larangan (Forbidden Hill) to Government Hill and lastly, when it became the present Fort Canning. During the occupation of Singapore by the Japanese, Fort Canning was used by the Japanese military authorities. In 1963, the British handed over Fort Canning to the Singapore Military Forces. Between 1963-1965, the 4th Malaysian Infantry Brigade Headquarters was housed at Fort Canning until Dec 1966 when Fort Canning was handed over to the SAF.

This gate and the adjoining wall are all that remain of a fort which was built on this hill between 1859 and 1861.

Fort Canning Green

This used to be the old Christain Cemetery until 1865. Those tombstones that were removed were set into the wall surrounding Fort Canning Green.

The Archaeological Dig Exhibition

Archaeological research on this site began in 1984. Thousands of artefacts have since been uncovered, confirming the historical significance of Fort Canning even before the arrival of the British in 1819.

3rd Stop : Civic District

Civilian Memorial Park

The Civilian Memorial Park was erected to remind of the shared experiences and struggles that the major races of Singapore faced during the World War II. Four pillars rise more than 60 meters high to symbolise the shared experiences of four major races of Singapore - Chinese, Malay, Indian and other races.

Tan Kim Seng Fountain

This is a beautiful Victorian fountain built in recognition of Tan Kim Seng, a prominent Chinese community leader and philanthropist who donated a sum of $13,000 in 1857 to the Municipal Council for the purpose of bringing free piped water to the Town.

Lim Bo Seng Memoriable

This marble pagoda is a memorial dedicated to Major-General Lim Bo Seng an outstanding World War II hero who led the anti-Japanese resistance movement.

Day 2 - The Bukit Chandu Trial

Today journey covered Kent Ridge Park, Reflection at Bukit Chandu & Tour of Grassroots Heritage Centre.

After our morning tea-break, all of us were ready to "conquer" the 280-metre long tree-top canopy walk which links Kent Ridge Park to the museum "Reflections at Bukit Chandu".

Reflections at Bukit Chandu is a World War II interpretative centre developed and managed by the National Archives of Singapore, located on Bukit Chandu (Opium Hill) off Pasir Panjang Road in Singapore.

The museum's exhibition gallery covers the history of World War II in Malaya, detailing the late 1930s socio-political climate of the Malay Peninsula, Japan's invasion plans and the British strategy for defending Singapore. There are exhibits of photographs, maps and artefacts. The recruitment, training, principles, and value of the Malay Regiment are represented, including through documentaries commissioned by the National Archives of Singapore, World War II paraphernalia, and witness testimony from the survivors.

End of the two-day Singapore Journey. It has been an interesting and knowledgeable session for me. I have a better understanding of Singapore's history, particularly its progress from a small fishing village to a modern city-state. This course has also enhanced my sense of national identity and rootedness. All of us in this course has also learnt about the importance of maintaining social harmony in nation building. Knowing about the tribulations that Singapore had to overcome, coupled with an understanding of the challenges facing it and its fragilities would call for our resilence in overcoming them so that Singapore may flourish.

Today is the Islamic festival of Hari Raya Haji. Hari Raya means festival, while Haji means that of pilgrim or pilgrimage. This is the day when Muslim prilgrims from all over the world end their journey to the sacred Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Fellow Muslims celebrate and honour those who have successfully completed this long and hard pilgrimage.

NACLI Course - Partners in Harmony

For members who have not attended any of the courses conducted by NACLI, I would like to share with you the course that I have attended on 21 & 22 November 2009. This is a 2 days course and involves visit to place of worship.

The objectives of this course is to encourage grassroot leaders to further appreciate Singapore's history, heritage and diversity; and to promote racial harmony and social cohesion.

We started our Day 1 journey to Gurdawara Sahid Silat Road Sikh Temple at 10:00am. The man in black polo is our course coordinator, Dr Prem Kumar.

Arrived at Silat Road Sikh Temple. All of us are required to cover our head with a scarf or a big handkerchief, wash our hands and remove any intoxicant materials, cigarettes before entering the temple.

We took a group photo before entering the main hall. Can you find me?

We were treated to a healthy Sikh morning tea. Chapatis with sour yogurt, plain cereal, dal and a cup of hot milk tea without sugar.

After the morning tea, we were given an Introduction to Sikh Religion, their practices, their belief, etc. We have also learnt a Sikh greeting - "Sat Sri Akal" which means roughly, "He/She Be Blessed who say Truth is God". "Sat Sri Akal" is used by Silks throughout the world when greeting other Sikhs regardless of their native language.

After the lesson, we were brought to the praying hall.

Next stop, Chinatown Heritage Centre.

Chinatown Heritage Centre houses a wealth of memories and untold stories from the past. Discover the secrets and chronicles of the migrants who made the perlios journey from their homeland to Singapore.

Last destination of Day 1 journey, we visited the Malay Heritage Centre , Istana Kampong Gelam.

The Malay Heritage Museum occupies the former Istana Kampong Gelam. It aims to showcase the history of Malays in the region and traces Singapore's own Malay heritage, social and economic development in nation-building as well as their contributions and aspirations for the future.

A typical HDB unit of the late 70s. The HDB unit represents their adaptability and resilient in facing the challenges, living together in a multi-racial society. The young lady in blue, Ms Wong Irnina Binte Mohd Shafiee (one of the course participant from Yuhua Constituency), was the "acting" guide on that day. She did a very good job explaining to us about the Malay culture. Thank you Irnina!

We also get to know Zubir Said, the composer of Singapore's National Anthem.

We began our Day 2 program with a guest speaker from Taoist Mission Singapore to talk on Taoism in Singapore.

Taoism is about learning, cultivation and practice, that is, learning about the ways of the Tao, self-cultivation to achieve Tao and practising the teachings of Taoism. Its origins could be traced back to the time of Yellow Emperor(Huang Di, 黄帝), thereafter it was promoted by the philosophical writing of Lao Zi(老子), and finally organised as a formal religion by Zhang Dao Ling(张道陵), the religion's Celestial Master.

After the talk, we started our journey to Qiong Yao Jiao Di (琼瑶教邸) temple.

We were brief on the Basis Tenets of Taoism, the Taoist Symbol of TAIJI, basic Greeting Rites and Taoism View of Life and Death.

After the temple visit, we had our lunch at Seah Im Food Centre before heading back to NACLI for our final de-brief of the 2 day Harmony Journey Tour. Each of us was given a post card size colour paper, a box of crayon and a picture frame. We had to draw about what we have seen & learnt from this learning journey.

In the early morning of 15 Nov 2009 at 6am, Kim was doing her final roll count before departing for our 1 day Pengerang shopping tour.

First stopover at Taman Sentosa for our sumptuous breakfast.

Shopping spree started immediately after the breakfast....cheong aar.....

Their famous Lao Po Bing 老婆饼...good buy, best buy, must buy!!

Next, Tien Hau Kong Temple...to wish for good health, good luck, Huat ah!

After wishing for good, we proceed to Ostrich Farm.

Some Nutritional facts about Ostrich meat (chart below). Look at the ostrich's egg yolk. One ostrich egg is equal to approximate 2 dozen chicken eggs. It is a little sweeter and fluffier than chicken eggs but tastes almost the same. They are lower in cholesterol and healthier than chicken eggs. The egg yolk is deep yellow-orange colour.

The ostrich's egg is able to withstand our weight!

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a much celebrated event in Chinese culture. Our Adviser, Mr Lee Yi Shyan (MP of East Coast GRC) took time to join with our residents to celebrate the Lantern Festival cum Children's Day Celebration on Friday, 2 October 2009.

To begin with, more than 500 residents converged to celebrate the night with Lion dance performances & lantern procession amidst a tranquil & romantic setting under the beautiful moon and stars. The crowd was also treated to magic show, songs and performances by professional entertainers. Residents, both young and old also enjoyed themselves through various fringe activities like games, glitter tattoo, balloon sculpturing, free pop corns/candy floss and of course the lucky draw segments with prizes worth over $2,000.

Air-conditioner

Close curtains or blinds over windows during the hottest part of the day, especially for west-facing windows, to keep the house cool.

Run the air-conditioner about an hour before bed and switch to a fan after that. Save about $430 a year**.

Turn off the air-conditioner half an hour earlier using a timer. Save about $35 a year**.

Check the air-conditioner air filter once a month and clean or replace it as necessary so that it runs efficiently. Dirty air filters impede airflow.

Service your air-conditioning units regularly. Besides the air filters, the condition of other components of an air-conditioning unit (such as the refrigerant, pipes and motors) also affects its efficiency.

Make a Smart Purchase

Choose the correct size for your air-conditioning unit. Oversized or undersized air-conditioning units can operate inefficiently. To find out the correct size for your air-conditioning unit, check with your air-conditioner retailer.

Install a multi-split air-conditioning unit if you usually require air-conditioning in more than one room, it is more energy efficient.

Refrigerator

Adjust the thermostat in the refrigerator to the recommended setting. Overcooling your refrigerator wastes electricity.

Allow hot food to cool before putting it in the fridge.

Cover liquids and wrap foods stored in the refrigerator. Uncovered foods release moisture and make the compressor work harder.

Do not overload the refrigerator to ensure the cold air can circulate freely. Too many items block air circulation and reduce cooling capabilities.

Do not leave refrigerator door open longer than necessary. Decide what you want before opening the refrigerator door.

Make sure the door shuts tightly. Test by closing the door over a piece of paper so it is half in and half out of the refrigerator. If you can pull the paper out easily, the hinge may need adjustment or the seal may need replacing.

Place the refrigerator away heat sources such as direct sunlight, cookers and the oven.

Allow some space around the fridge (e.g. 5 centimetres or as recommended by the manufacturer) to allow heat to escape from the compressor and condensing coil.

Make a Smart Purchase

Buy the smallest model refrigerator that meets your needs as generally, larger models use more energy to operate. Consider the need for additional features such as automatic icemakers and through-the-door dispensers, as they increase energy use.

Lighting

Make the most of the natural light available. Use light-colored, loose-weave curtains on your windows to allow daylight to penetrate the room while preserving privacy.

Use lighter colours in areas where you want to be bright, as lighter colours reflect light.

Use light dimmers whenever possible.

Switch the lights off when you leave the room.

Keep the room's light low when watching television. This saves electricity and also cuts annoying glare from your TV screen.

Dust or clean lamps and fixtures regularly. Dust on lamps and reflectors mean less light and less energy efficiency.

Computer/Home Electronics

Switch off the computer completely when not in use for long periods (e.g. more than 30 minutes). Leaving a desktop (300W) on every day for 8 hours (e.g. overnight) will cost about $15 a month**.

Enable your computer's energy-saving features, such as switching to hibernation mode after a certain amount of time.

Switch off the TV set when no one is watching.

Make a Smart Purchase

Consider buying a laptop for your next computer upgrade as they use significantly less energy than desktop computers.

Water Heater

If you have an instantaneous water heater, switch it on before you shower and turn it off after use..

If you have a storage water heater, switch it on about 20 minutes before taking a bath, and switch it off after use. Leaving it on for too much time wastes energy.

Make a Smart Purchase

Choose an instantaneous water heater instead of a storage water heater as it is more energy efficient. If you are buying a storage water heater, a capacity of 23-27 litres is suitable for a family of 4-6 persons.

Washing Machine

Wash with a full load.

Wash clothes in cold water. It is not really necessary to use the water heater function in our washing machines as our water is warm enough for the wash to be effective.

Fabric conditioner reduces creases which means less ironing time.

Air-dry your clothes rather than use a clothes dryer.

Ironing

Start with items which need lower temperatures and avoid heating and re-heating the iron.

Turn off iron and use residual heat for delicate items.

Cooking

Boil water only when needed or consider using a thermo-flask to keep hot water. Electric air-pots which keep water hot constantly can cost you about $15 a month** in electricity

Do not boil more water than you need.

Cover your pots while cooking. Covered food cooks faster.

Match the size of the pot with the size of the burner as the energy is lost when the heating element is larger than the pot you are using.

Turn electric hotplates off before the food is fully cooked, as the remaining heat can complete the cooking.

Avoid opening the oven door while cooking.

Pressure cookers consume less energy and cook much faster. By cooking food at a higher temperature and pressure, a pressure cooker can save up to two-thirds in cooking time and energy use can be cut by 50-75% compared to conventional methods.

New tax accreditation scheme

A new organisation will be set up to accredit tax practitioners, as part of efforts to improve the efficiency and quality of tax audits in Singapore.

The new institute, set up by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) in partnership with the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), is expected to be up and running early next year.

While the accreditation scheme is not compulsory, tax professionals will be able to benefit from the professional recognition as well as programmes designed to improve their technical skills and knowledge on tax-related matters.

Participants will have to attend a structured tax training accredited programme which will be conducted by the Tax Academy of Singapore and may be required to complete relevant examinations before getting accredited.

They can then earn titles of either an accredited tax practitioner or an accredited tax advisor, depending on their level of experience.

'The benefits for the economy as a whole will be improved tax compliance, and lower compliance costs, and overall a more business friendly operating environment,' said Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower on Thursday at the Asia-Pacific Taxation conference, where the scheme was unveiled.

Five Simple Steps to Save 10% of Your Home Electricity Use

The air-conditioner uses the bulk of the electricity in a home. A fan uses less than 1/10th the electricity used by an air-conditioner! Use a fan instead of an air-conditioner to keep cool. Save about $40 a month or about $500 a year*.

The lower the temperature setting, the more energy used by your air-conditioner. If you use an air-conditioner, set the temperature at 25oC or higher. For every degree raised, save about $15 a year*.

Switch off home appliances at the power socket. Standby power can account for up to 10% of your home electricity use. Do not leave them on standby. Save about $40 a year*.

Choose energy efficient light bulbs (e.g. compact fluorescent lamps). Using a compact fluorescent lamp (7W) instead of an incandescent bulb (40W) can save about about $15 per bulb per year*.

Choose an energy-efficient appliance (e.g. air-conditioner. refrigerator) by checking the energy labels. A 4-tick air-conditioner saves you about $270 in electricity bills a year compared to a 1-tick model, and a 4-tick refrigerator saves you about $80 a year over a 1-tick model*.

Users will earn loyalty points when paying for rides and purchases.

Some 600,000 members of the People's Association (PA) will soon be able to use their membership cards to pay for public transport rides and purchases - and rack up loyalty points along the way.

Set to be launched in Novemeber, the PAssion ez-link card is the first to double as a public transport card and a Cash Card, and is also the first to earn users reward points for travelling by bus or MRT.

Points earned on the PAssion card will qualify signed-up members for discounts and promotions at more than 5,000 participating merchants, such as 7-Eleven convenience stores.

These cards can be topped up at any MRT station. In addition, new top-up terminals will be installed at all 105 PA community centres.

The new venture is the result of a collaboration between the association and EZ-link and QB - both building the necessary technology infrastructure.

On its part, the PA is offering enhanced discounts for members signing up for community centre courses and activities.

PA chief executive Tan Boon Huat said the move aims to generate greater convenience for its members, and also attract more members to PAssion card scheme.

EXCHANGE YOUR ez-link card BEFORE 30 SEPTEMBER

Dear Residents,

New CEPAS-compliant cards will be required for travel on public transport from October 2009.

Exchange your current ez-link card for a new CEPAS card before 30 September 2009.

When exchanging your card:

Bring along your current ez-link card. Any remaining value in the current card will be transferred to your new card.

Before going to the card exchange counter, top up your current card at any automated top-up machine or Passenger Service Counter if the value is less than -$3 (for adult ez-link, senior citizen, tertiary or NSmen concession cards), or less than -$1 (for child, primary, secobdary, JC or ITE concession cards). Top-up service are not avaiable at the card exchange counter.

A maximum of 3 cards may be exchanged per transaction.

The 1-for-1 card replacement exercise for all adult ez-link cards to be exchanged to the new CEPAS ez-link cards at the following channels:

As part of the "My New Singapore" Programme announced by URA to encourage people to rediscover Singapore, Rainbow Ville RC has organized a one day trip for our grassroot leaders and their families to Marina Barrage, LTA Gallery, Singapore City Gallery (URA) and NEWater Visitor Centre on Saturday 15th August 2009.

Through this trip, members get to find out how the Barrage works, learn about planning in Singapore through the draft Master Plan 2008, see the past, present and future transportation plans of Singapore and also the actual making of Newater at the NEWater Factory.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members and their families for their active participation. Last but not least, a BIG THANK YOU to Mr Ong Sim Leong (Vice-Chairman), Mr Ng Kia Heng (Auditor) and Ms Koh Hwee Tin (Treasurer) for making this event successful.

Guide to our constituency : Kampong Chai Chee

Kampong Chai Chee
is a combination of Malay and Hokkien words, meaning "village market place". And so it was: a village of attap huts that became the centre of a constituency in March 1968. It included every kampong from Changi West to Kaki Bukit. Today, it is a tiny tenth of its original size, but comprises of 7,581 units.

Kampong Chai Chee Community Centre is located at 200 Bedok North Avenue 1.

The Management Committee set up Daiko, the Japanese Drum (Taiko) in December 1997, the first of its kind to be set up at a community centre in Singapore.

We also have our very own Interactive Parenting Club (IPC), a platform for families with children to meet and organise activities so as to enjoy quality time together.

Beside these interest groups, our evergreen activities include hot favourite such as Culinary Classes ranging from Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indian cuisines. Karaoke singing and Social Dance have been a hit with senior folks while juniors have their share of fun learning Art, Ballet, Taekwondo, Wushu, and so on
