Banana Pie...Anyone?

THE first thing that hits you at Dona Manis Cake Shop is the intoxicating smell of buttery pastry baking in the oven.

Then you notice that behind the display counter, someone is cutting potatoes into cubes for curry puffs and rolling out dough.

The stand-out item is the banana pie ($2.00 a slice, $20 for the whole pie),with its tender, flaky pastry. There is a rich, satisfying taste of butter in every bite. The pastry chef uses only ang bak cheo (Hokkien for red-flesh bananas) and pang cheo (fragrant bananas). These small, sweet bananas taste much better than the big, bland ones you get in supermarkets.
Yummy yummy....
